If you were formally courting someone, what gift would you give them?:
APPLICATION FOR DETECTIVE TRAINING SUMMIT 2014
Detective Joseph Oda, Krimson City Police Department
NOTE 1:
Is this relevant? Please clarify what this information will be used for and what purpose it serves to the position in question.
NOTE 2:
Please clarify the definition of "courting."
If used in the traditional sense (ie: the old-fashioned and deeply formal rituals of courtship practiced before ~early/mid 20th century -- here, with the assumption of Western cultural norms) I would seriously question the necessity. While traditional courtship may be charming in a fictional context, it practice it perpetuated a patriarchal system that relegates women to the level of property, and excludes any who don't subscribe to gender essentialist, heteronormative identities and expectations. To follow these standards in the 21st century would be unusual and perhaps offensive. I frankly cannot imagine a scenario where a person I'm interested in would enjoy this.
If, however, we use "courting" in a more metaphorical sense (ie; the general practice of initiating a romantic relationship with someone) the premise of the question remains flawed. It assumes a level of standardization in the giving of gifts (ie: the assumption that there is only one "correct" answer, a gift that I would give any and all potential partners.) This does not take into account the individual preferences that a potential romantic interest may have. Gifts should be given from the heart and have thought put into them; I would have to know the person well enough to understand their tastes, likes, dislikes, etc and choose a gift based on those preferences.
(At the bottom of the page is written:)
Insufficient space provided for answering this question. I have attached additional remarks on the following 9 pages.
(9 pages later, circled:)
I suspect "something they would like" is not a sufficient answer for this, but it's the best answer I have.
(On a sticky note attached to the top of the stack of documents:)
NOTE 3:
I apologize for the misunderstanding, I was under the impression this interview was for something else. Please disregard attached paperwork and return to my desk for filing.
